The Cordyceps genus belongs to a group of parasitic mushrooms - it grows on insects and caterpillars. The spores of the fungi are spread by wind, land on soil or plants and thus enter in contact with insects. Originally, Cordyceps sinensis comes from the Tibetan plateau, at 4,000 m.a.s.l. Harvesting this mushroom is the most significant source of income in some parts of Tibet and China.
Centuries ago, Tibetan shepherds noticed that after consuming Cordyceps, their animals showed extraordinary strength, vitality, and fertility. Curiosity inspired them to try it themselves. Subsequently, the mushroom gained popularity at the Imperial Court and has formed an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine ever since.
Cordyceps contains polysaccharides with antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. Important are Beta-glucans, for example, whose content is over 10 % in this product. Additionally, the mushroom is a rich source of nucleosides, steroles, vitamin B1, B2 and K, and minerals including calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and selenium.
